This study investigates the coverage of solid waste management on 1142 websites maintained by companies, news media and non‐governmental organizations to validate an automated approach to content and language analysis. First, a frequency analysis of waste management terms sheds light on the breadth and depth of their environmental discourses, revealing that corporate and media attention to waste management is small compared with that of non‐governmental organizations. Second, an investigation of their attitudes toward waste management suggests that companies avoid negative information in environmental communication, unlike news media or non‐governmental organizations. Ultimately, an automated tool for ontology building is employed to gain insights into companies' shared understanding of waste management. The ontology obtained indicates that companies conceptualize waste management as a business process rather than framing it from an ecological perspective, which is in line with findings from previous research. The qualitative quantitative issue has been given attention in sociological scholarship for decades. Upon theoretical examination
of the basis of separations, the commonly used criteria of subjectivity versus objectivity, systematization, quantification
and generalization, do not separate. This suggests that the impetus for the qualitative/quantitative issue is more political
than intellectual owing to several factors in the practice of sociology: diverse intellectual heritages, the domination of
quantitative sociologists in teaching methods and writing methods text books, the proliferation of computer technology in
the past 20 years, and separation of theory and method. Advancing sociological methods means transcending the quantitative/qualitative

Most qualitative researchers do not recommend generalization from qualitative studies, as this research is not based on random
samples and statistical controls. The objective of this study is to explore the degree to which in-service teachers understand
the controversial aspects of generalization in both qualitative and quantitative educational research and as to how this can
facilitate problems faced by the teachers in the classroom. The study is based on 83 participants who had registered for a
10-week course on ‘Methodology of Investigation in Education’ as part of their Master’s degree program. The course is based
on 11 readings drawing on a philosophy of science perspective (positivism, constructivism, Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos). Course
activities included written reports, class room discussions based on participants’ presentations, and written exams. Based
on the results obtained it is concluded: (1) almost 91% of the teachers agreed that external generalization in a different
social context is feasible; (2) almost 63% of the participants used a fairly inconsistent approach, that is in a theoretical
context agreed that qualitative research cannot be generalized and still when asked with respect to the experience of two
particular teachers, agreed that generalization was possible; (3) almost 28% of the participants used a consistent approach.
Some of the reasons provided by the participants as to why generalization was feasible are discussed. An analogy is drawn
with respect to Piaget’s methodology, viz., it was not based on random samples or statistical treatments and still his oeuvre has been generalized (criticisms not withstanding) in both the psychology and educational literature. 相似文献

根据GenBank中收录的鸡毒支原体、禽白血病病毒和网状内皮细胞增生症病毒的基因序列,分别设计并合成了引物和相应的荧光探针,通过对反应条件和反应程序的优化,建立了一种可以同时检测3种禽用疫苗外源性病原污染因子的三重荧光PCR检测方法。结果显示,建立的三重荧光PCR灵敏度高,最低可检测到10 copies/μL的质粒,并具有良好的特异性,可用于禽用疫苗外源性污染因子的快速检测,也可用于相关疫病的诊断。 相似文献

Quantitative text analysis refers tothe application of one or more methods for drawingstatistical inferences from text populations. Afterbriefly distinguishing quantitative text analysisfrom linguistics, computational linguistics, andqualitative text analysis, issues raised during the1955 Allerton House Conference are used as a vehiclefor characterizing classical text analysis as aninstrumental-thematic method. Quantitative textanalysis methods are then depicted according to a2 × 3 conceptual framework in which texts areinterpreted either instrumentally (according to theresearcher's conceptual framework) orrepresentationally (according to the texts' sources'perspectives), as well as in which variables arethematic (counts of word/phrase occurrences),semantic (themes within a semantic grammar), ornetwork-related (theme- or relation-positions withina conceptual network). Common methodological errorsassociated with each method are discussed.
